Can you give me some background on Malt-O-Meal history?

Malt-O-Meal brand of bagged cereals was launched in Canada by the Malt-O-Meal Company in August 2011. In 2015, Malt-O-Meal became a part of the Post Consumer Brands family under Post Holdings, Inc.

How do I read the code date on my Malt-O-Meal cereal bag?

All Malt-O-Meal cereals have a code (or “Best Before”) date on the lower back side of the bag. For example, if the code date reads “01JN2017,” the corresponding “Best Before” date is June 1, 2017. By referring to the Best Before date you can be sure the product you’ve chosen is at peak freshness at the time of purchase and for a reasonable period of time thereafter, when stored unopened in a cool, dry place. We cannot guarantee the freshness past the Best Before date code.

Is it safe to eat your cereal when it has passed its ‘Best Before’ date?

We cannot guarantee product quality after the Best Before date. Always do your own due diligence in determining if the unopened product meets your standard of acceptance.

How should I store my Malt-O-Meal cereal once I’ve opened it?

Every Malt-O-Meal cereal bag comes with a re-sealable feature to help keep your cereals tasting fresher for longer. In general, we recommend you keep our cereals in a cool, dry place.

Are your cereal products Kosher certified?

Many of our cereal products are Kosher certified. If the product you are interested in is Kosher certified, its packaging will reflect its certification status and category. Kosher certifications may change over time, so the best way to determine a product’s Kosher status is to look at the front of the package. Our product packages will always reflect the most current information.

What is the source of gelatin in your products?

The gelatin we use in some of our products is derived from pork. If you are looking to avoid gelatin from animal sources, please look for the Kosher symbol.

Are your cereal bags recyclable?

No, we currently use the lowest density poly material proven (the bags are made out of reverse printed OPP lamination) to keep our cereals safe and fresh. Unfortunately, this poly material is not recyclable and therefore, does not have a recycling symbol. We continue to review any new packaging materials that become available to us. When it comes to the packaging of our products, our first priority is to provide consumers with safe and fresh products. The polyethylene bags we use provide our customers with wholesome, quality products without the high cost of traditional cereal packaging materials.

How do I ask my favourite grocery store to carry Malt-O-Meal cereals?

Call or write to the manager at your favourite grocery store and request they carry Malt-O-Meal cereals.

How did Grape-Nuts get its name?

Grape-Nuts, the cereal that is neither a grape nor a nut, is made from natural wheat and malted barley flour. This unique, naturally sweet cereal was created in 1897. Some people believe that C.W. Post came up with the name because C.W. Post claimed the cereal had a distinctive nutty flavour. The cereal with the funny name is a high source of fibre and is self-sweetened with the monosaccharaide maltose created in the fermentation process of the malted barley flour.

What are whole grains?

“Whole grains” is a descriptor for certain foods such as wheat, oats, barley, and rye which are “kernels”. A whole grain kernel is made up of three parts: the bran, the endosperm and the germ. The bran is the outer layer and provides most of the dietary fibre. The endosperm is the middle part of the kernel, and stores the protein and carbohydrates. The germ is the inner core, and contains some protein, vitamins, minerals and unsaturated fats. A refined grain (like wheat flour) typically has the bran and germ components removed, leaving the nutritional profile of the endosperm of the original kernel (also known as a “wheat berry”). Health Canada’s Food Guide recommends making at least half of your grain products whole grain each day. Many Post products are made with whole grains (see each product’s ingredient line and nutrition information for more details).

What is your allergen labeling policy?

We understand and share the concerns expressed by consumers who are affected by food allergies and intolerances. Food Allergic consumers and consumers with food intolerances should rely on our package ingredient labels for the most accurate information on a product. If a product contains any of the ten priority allergens listed below, it will be clearly listed in bold print in the Allergen Statement following the ingredient declaration.

The Ten Priority Allergens are: Peanuts, Tree Nuts (almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts (filberts), macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts), Sesame, Mustard, Milk, Eggs, Seafood (Fish, Crustaceans and Shellfish), Soy, Wheat & Sulphites (a food additive). Also declared will be sources of Gluten protein from barley, oats, rye, triticale or wheat (or a hybridized strain of any of these cereal grains).  Please consult Health Canada’s Food Allergies & Intolerances website for more consumer information on food allergens and intolerances. http://hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/securit/allerg/fa-aa/index-eng.php

Are any of your products Kosher or pareve?

Most of our cereal products are Kosher certified. If the product you are interested in is Kosher certified, its packaging will reflect its certification status and indicate whether the product is dairy. Kosher certifications may change over time, so the best way to determine a product’s Kosher status is to look at the front of the package. Our product packages will always reflect the most current information.
